I just got done watching the movie "The Prestige" and...?

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone reading this so i will try to put it as simply as possible. Does it explain somewhere how Alfred and Fallon came to be? Like when did it happen, or who was the first one? What did the first one do with the machine, how did he get it in the first place?
