Every summer there's forest fires out west (U.S.), so why are they always big news?

Are we really so forgetful that from one year to another we are surprised by this and have to see it on every news show? Sort of like, every time there is a hurricane, it's like major news too, even though we get 10 a year every year. I don't get it.
