Do I need to get the copyright (or whatever)?

For a school project I was thinking of doing a cover of a song. If I include the original artist, producers, and everything in my bibliography, noting that I did not compose the song, do I still need to get the copyright? I'm not going to sell my cover, just make my clmates and teacher listen to it.
